A Long Way Home 5 A New Life Summary & Analysis

Saroo grows older, discovering a passion for sports and working hard to be successful in high school. Saroo thinks of his family in India often, but it takes him a while to tell anyone his story. Saroo’s adopted parents don’t push him to tell his story too soon and understand when he brings up his biological family.

Saroo is thankful that he survived the experience relatively unscathed. Ishmael's migraines symbolize the memories he is trying to repress. Each time he thinks of his childhood, his head begins to hurt. He has flashbacks to war memories, which seem to cause sharp pains in his head. His physical symptoms seem to be in reaction to his emotional struggles. The music he's again surrounding himself with is helpful in focusing his mind.

Plot Summary

Again, bathing Saroo is another way for Mum to demonstrate how she'll care for her new son, which in turn shows Saroo that he can trust her to care for him kindly and gently. The disbelief Saroo mentions alludes to the fact that this all happened very quickly compared to other adoptions; it's only been seven months since the police took custody of Saroo. They can't talk to each other, so they sit and point at pictures in the photo album.

The story was way too long and drawn out for the terrible payoff we get in the end. I was wondering about reading the next book in the series, and a friend said she thinks I will like that much better, so I will. But, I wanted to post my review of book #10 before I totally forgot about it. Saroo’s father abandons his family and runs off with another woman.

Sadly, Saroo learns that Guddu died at the same time he disappeared. One evening when Saroo is five, Saroo insists that Guddu take him back to “Berampur” with him. Saroo quickly begins to feel tired, however, and when they reach the station, Guddu instructs Saroo to stay where he is and nap. Saroo does as he’s told but wakes with a start some time later. Believing that Guddu is on the train, Saroo boards it. The doors close, trapping Saroo, and he spends about fifteen hours crying, sleeping, and panicking as the train races away from his home and family.

Ishmael Beah

When Saroo is about 3, his biological father leaves Saroo’s mother to live with another woman. His second wife is jealous, and Saroo’s mother believes that she keeps him from seeing his first wife and kids. Saroo has a memory of visiting his father, his new wife and their baby. Saroo’s father chases after Saroo’s mother, and they shout at each other.

I’ve very much enjoyed Louise Penny’s earlier novels and I found her charming and delightful in person, but I cannot read any more of these books. This chapter is a turning point because Ishmael and his friends are conscripted as child soldiers for the first time. It is ironic that the very village where life seems normal and safe becomes the place where their futures as child soldiers are determined. The theme of the horror of war is prevalent throughout this chapter as Ishmael and the other boys face an impossible decision. If they flee the protection of the village, they risk being killed by the rebels.

A New Life

It’s an emotional experience, and the joy doesn’t need translation. Saroo explains that he’s in the process of buying Kamla a house, and he’s also helping fund repairs to the Nava Jeevan orphanage. He’s grateful for everything that happened, and has no regrets. Saroo stays with the teenager for a few days until the teenager takes Saroo to the police.

John, his adopted father, was born to an English father who immigrated to Australia. Sue had a vision as a teenager of a brown-skinned child by her side. Saroo and his family communicate through interpreters. Saroo’s mother converted to Islam after Saroo’s disappearance, so she changed her name from Kamla to Fatima. Shekila, Saroo’s sister, has a husband and two sons.
