There was a lot of fluff and filler in this book, all the stuff that I put up with in the other books because Gamache is so fantastic and smart. Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he’d only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." Soon, the boys are taken into custody by government soldiers and transported to a town being used as a military base.

Planning this trip also suggests that for Mum and Dad, India is a place to visit and enjoy, while for their sons, it's so much more—it's where they came from, and they suffered there. Are initially excited, but soon begin to feel anxious. They begin experiencing anxiety about things they thought they’d put behind them already, and the idea becomes more and more upsetting. The "Howrah" coincidence also adds more weight to Saroo's growing sense that there's possibly more at play than chance.

They have no evidence he needs found or is in danger. And she’s the one who kicked him out of the house in the first place. So, after tracking Peter to the Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Scotland , to Paris, back to Toronto they do eventually find him. Of course, they can’t just find him happy and painting bad pictures of the St. Lawrence river.

Plot Summary

Baba is the local “Muslim holy man,” who briefly gives Saroo, as a child, advice about dogs and appears for Saroo’s circumcision. Saroo now pays for his biological mother’s rent, food and whatever makes her more comfortable. He plans to buy her a better home in Ganesh Talai, the area she has lived in most of her life.

He realizes that wars and conflict have stolen other childhoods like his. He and the other delegates have long discussions about how to end the suffering in war-torn countries. Ishmael bonds with a storyteller, Laura Simms, who invites the children to share their struggles through oral tradition and music. The social custom of respecting elders is violated due to the war.

HE doesn't risk returning to the train station and instead wanders the streets of Calcutta following a river. Finally, Saroo meets a teenage boy who goes with him to the police station convincing him that they are going to help. Saroo was amazed at how much better life was in Australia, and how easy assimilation was thanks to his parents. Some years later, Mum and Dad adopted a second Indian boy named Mantosh. Saroo and Mantosh both deeply loved Mum and Dad, but Saroo always wondered about the fate of his Indian family. As Saroo grew, he became thoroughly Western in mannerisms and language, and went on to college and hotelier school.

They are people you want to know; what to have as friends and neighbors. You find yourself both wanting to know these people and, in some cases, wanting to be them. The dialogue is so well done, with an easy, natural flow and, occasionally, delightful humour. The Long Way Home is essentially a hunt-and-find story, complete with our motley crew traveling across Quebec and beyond in search of Peter, retracing his steps from the previous year. I really don't want to say anything else, but will say that the ending wrecked me. Peter Morrow has always been my least favorite character of the series, so this high star rating on a book centered on his story is an incredible flip for me, but wow—this installment was good.

Ms Penny's Gamache mysteries and Ralph Cosham's voice remain, for me, a match made in heaven. I like this authors books usually but I struggled quite a bit with this one. Clara, Gamache, Beauvoir and Myrna set off on a quest to find out why Peter has not returned. For me, I think this is where the story starts to lag a bit and things become very convoluted.

I was very disappointed in this book, but hope that the series can pick itself up again with a more interesting story. While Gamache doesn’t talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up.

Louise lives in a small village south of Montréal. Ms Penny's books tend to feel meditative, almost like lullabies for the mind. I understand that mysteries are a kind of piling on of details, some matter, some do not, but usually Ms Penny achieves this by drawing us into the world, not keeping us outside the story. The things I enjoy about Louise Penny is her ability to go in-depth with rounding out her characters where the reader is so aware of what and who they stand for and what part they play. Ms. Penny is an intelligent author who includes poetry, literature, art, mythology and psychology into the story, yet she doesn’t, in any way, write above her readers or seek to demean them. Armand Gamache has retired to the town of Three Pines with his wife, Reine-Marie, following the incredibly high-octane ending of the previous book, How the Light Gets In.
